What kind of memorial is it?
Memorial drive is a line of memorial sycamores planted to honor the dead from the World War. Sycamores are a tall and striking shade tree. The effect is to cover the street in a canopy of green.
When was it dedicated and why?
The trees were planted in November of 1920 on Armistice Day. There were 58, now there are more. This is probably to correlate to the number of dead students and alumni there were. 56 men and 2 women
Your experience: The early spring day was chilly and a bit rainy, the cathedral like effect of the trees still domes the street though. The campus had begun in person classes again, and the small signs of spring were everywhere. It was really odd to think about how similar to modern day a thing from 100 years ago was. While I was there I saw a guy from a frat come to polish the monument. Apparently it’s a tradition they still keep.
